오랜만에 글을 올립니다. 저는 이번 학기에 본업을 잠시 쉬고 대학원 석사과정 졸업을 위해 전일제 공부를 하고 있습니다.

모든 분야에서 연구물이 폭발적으로 쏟아지는 시기라, 어렵게 찾은 논문이나 책을 다 읽지 못하기도 하고, 읽었지만 필요한 부분을 다시 찾느라 많은 시간을 보내기도 합니다. 가끔은 차라리 인쇄해서 필기를 하고 태그를 붙이거나, 심지어 필요한 부분을 잘라 스크랩하는 방식이 낫겠다고 생각될 때도 있죠. Liquidtext는 바로 이런 지점에서 연구에 큰 도움을 줍니다. 안타깝게도 최근 마케팅에 별로 관심이 없는지 광고가 7년 전 것입니다만 핵심 기능을 보는 데는 무리가 없을 듯합니다.

유동적인(liquid) 텍스트라는 제품명 그대로 논문의 일부분을 떠내서 워크스페이스에 옮겨놓고, 서로 연결하거나 태그하는 것이 가능합니다. 한 프로젝트에 논문을 여러 개 포함할 수 있고, 필요하다면 워크스페이스를 추가하거나 계열화할 수도 있습니다. 광고에는 나오지 않지만 지금은 파일명에 따라 추출한 텍스트마다 출처를 표시해 주어 논문 관리가 매우 편리합니다(앞으로 ChatGPT를 통합해, 열어 둔 논문에 관련된 내용을 대략 텍스트박스에 쓰면 해당 논문에서 적절한 근거를 찾아주는 기능도 추가된다고 합니다. 인용을 찾아 논문을 읽을 때 효과적일 것 같습니다). 정리한 결과를 PDF로 내보낼 수 있고, 이때 원문까지 같이 포함하여 다른 사람이 링크를 클릭하면서 출처를 확인하도록 하는 것도 가능합니다. 이 외의 자세한 기능 설명은 다른 곳에도 많기 때문에 저는 실제로 사용하시는 분들을 위해 지금까지 제가 발견한 팁들을 적고 업데이트해 가려고 합니다.

 

설치는 윈도우 스토어를 통해서만 가능합니다.

Liquidtext 사용팁

1. 윈도우 환경에서 프로 버전을 사용하는 것을 추천합니다.

Liquidtext가 아이패드에서 출발한 앱이고 직관적인 사용성을 가지는 것은 사실이지만, 논문을 읽고 워크스페이스에 정리하다 보면 크기에서 오는 한계도 분명합니다. 제 경우 27인치 UHD 모니터에서 윈도우 버전을 사용하고부터는 아이패드의 해상도에 비해 부족하지 않으면서 작업 공간이 4배 정도로 증가해서 만족스럽게 사용하고 있습니다. 가격도 다릅니다. 프로의 경우 앱스토어 가격은 일회 구입 60,000원(학생할인 30,000원)인 데 비해 윈도우 버전은 39.99달러로, 환율 1320원/달러 기준 약 52,000원(학생할인은 19.99달러로 약 26,000원)입니다.

물론 프로의 상위 구독 버전인 Live 및 Live unlimited의 경우 앱스토어와 윈도우 스토어 사이의 가격 차이는 덜하지만, 중요한 것은 결국 논문은 컴퓨터로 쓰게 된다는 점입니다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 Live 이상의 버전에서는 클라우드 저장 및 동기화를 지원하는데, 이 동기화가 불안정한 편일 뿐더러, 가장 큰 문제는 동기화 과정에서 PDF가 변환을 거치면서 편집 가능한 텍스트가 지워진 이미지 형태의 파일이 된다는 점입니다. 여기서 다시 Liquidtext가 제공하는 OCR 기능을 이용할 수도 있지만, 번거로울 뿐 아니라 OCR이 비효율적이라 파일 크기가 10배로 늘어나기도 한다는 문제가 있습니다. 저는 다행히 Live 무료 체험 기간에 이런 문제를 확인하고 프로 버전을 구입했습니다. 참고로 OCR이 필요한 문서는 알PDF를 이용하시면 더 빠르고 용량도 덜 늘어납니다.

 

2. 추출한 텍스트(excerpt)끼리 너무 길게 연결하지 않는 것이 좋습니다.

추출한 텍스트를 드래그해서 다른 텍스트에 겹쳤다가 옆으로 옮기면 Liquid한 모양으로 서로 연결되는데, 이게 보기에는 예쁘지만 워크스페이스를 확대, 축소, 드래그하는 경우 연결한 텍스트들이 보이지 않거나 튕겨나가는 경우가 생깁니다.

텍스트를 연결해 놓는 것의 장점은 시각적인 것 외에 하나를 더블클릭해서 전체를 선택할 수 있다는 점이긴 한데, 이것은 선택 도구를 적극 활용해서 커버할 수 있습니다. 해당 도구 단축키(Ctrl+L)와 기본 텍스트 선택 도구 단축키(Ctrl+T)를 적절히 사용하는 것도 좋겠습니다. 또 연결 표시는 펜 도구를 사용하면 제약도 적고 번거로운 일도 덜 생깁니다.

 

3. 폴더를 먼저 생성하고 하위 프로젝트를 생성하시기 바랍니다.

프로젝트가 많아지다 보면 홈 화면을 관리하고 싶어지는데요, 반드시 폴더를 먼저 생성하시고 프로젝트를 그 안에 생성하시기를 권합니다. 기존의 프로젝트를 폴더로 이동하는 것은 드래그로도 안 되고 별도의 메뉴로도 지원하지 않기 때문입니다. 다만 2023년 3월 기준으로 Export-Import를 통해 이를 해결할 수 있습니다. 원하는 프로젝트를 우클릭하여 드롭다운 메뉴에서 export를 선택하고, 적절한 위치에 파일을 저장합니다. 다시 원하는 폴더에 들어가서 저장한 파일(*.ltproj)을 드래그해 넣고, 대화상자에서 Import again을 선택하면 프로젝트가 그 폴더 안에 생성됩니다. 이후 원래 위치의 프로젝트를 삭제해 주시면 됩니다.

 

4. 윈도우 버전만의 인터페이스

아이패드 버전의 장점은 직관적인 조작 기능성인데요, 키보드와 마우스를 사용하는 윈도우 환경에서는 조금 덜 직관적이지만 더 신뢰성 있는 방식의 조작이 가능합니다.

•  형광펜 부분 모아보기 기능: 윈도우 버전에서 왼쪽의 하이라이트 뷰(단축키 Alt+G)를 켠 다음, Shift키를 누른 상태로 드래그하면 사용할 수 있습니다.
• 화면 이동: 워크스페이스를 돌아다닐 때 왼쪽 버튼을 클릭하다 보면 추출해 놓은 텍스트가 선택되고 옮겨져서 귀찮을 때가 있습니다. 대신 마우스 휠을 클릭해서 드래그하면 화면 이동만 할 수 있습니다.
• 확대/축소: 이건 상식에 가깝지만, 워크스페이스를 확대/축소할 때는 Ctrl키를 누르고 마우스휠을 돌리면 됩니다.
• 검색: 입력 중이 아닐 때 타이핑하면 전역 검색이 발동합니다. 숫자를 입력한 경우 열려 있는 문서의 해당 페이지로 이동할 수 있고, 프로젝트 내의 문서 제목에 대한 검색 결과가 기본 제공되며, 상세검색으로 현재 문서 내에서 찾기, 프로젝트 안의 모든 문서에서 찾기, 현재 워크스페이스 내에서 찾기, 프로젝트 안의 모든 워크스페이스에서 찾기 옵션이 제공됩니다.
• 펜 기능이 안될 때: 와콤 등의 디지타이저(타블렛) 제품을 사용하거나 서피스, 갤럭시북 등 스타일러스 입력이 가능한 환경에서는 마우스로 펜 기능을 사용할 수 없을 때가 있습니다. 이럴 때는 오른쪽 위 설정(…)을 열어 use finger/mouse for inking 옵션을 켜주시면 됩니다.

Liquidtext perks + installation

It's been a while since I've posted. I'm taking a break from my day job this semester to study full-time for my master's degree.
There's been an ongoing explosion of research in every field, and I often find myself unable to finish a paper or book I've found, or spending a lot of time trying to find what I need again. Sometimes I'd rather just print it out, take notes, tag it, or even cut and scrap the parts I need, and that's where Liquidtext comes in handy for research. The ad below is from seven years ago, but it still shows their core features.

The wide bezels of the old iPad are eye-catching.

True to its name, liquid text allows you to pull out parts of a paper and drop them into a workspace, linking or tagging them together. You can have multiple papers in a project, and you can add or nest workspaces as needed. It's not in the ad, but right now it shows sources for each extracted text based on the filename, which makes managing papers a breeze (I'm told that in the future they'll integrate ChatGPT, so you can write roughly what you want to say about a paper you have open in a textbox and it'll find the appropriate evidence in that paper, which would be great for reading papers looking for citations). You can also export your findings to a PDF, with the full text included so that others can click on the link and see the source. There are plenty of other detailed feature descriptions elsewhere, so I thought I'd write down the tips I've found so far and update them as I go along for those of you who actually use it.

Tips for using Liquidtext

1. Use the Pro version for Windows.

While Liquidtext originated on the iPad with an advantage of intuitive usability, the size limitations are obvious when reading papers and organizing them in a workspace. I've been using the Windows version on a 27-inch UHD monitor and have been very happy with the quadrupling of my workspace while not falling short of the iPad's resolution. Pricing is also slightly different, with the Windows version some 15% cheaper.
Even if you choose to subscibe for Live version and use it both on your iPad and your PC, you're still going to be writing your paper on your PC. Unfortunately, cloud storage and synchronization can be unreliable, and the biggest problem is that during the synchronization process, the PDF becomes an image file with editable text erased during conversion. Again, you can use Liquidtext's OCR feature, but it's a hassle and the OCR is inefficient, often increasing the file size by 10x. I was fortunate enough to see this problem during the Live free trial and purchased the pro version. For documents that need OCR, other softwares do it faster and results are less bulky.

2. Don't link too many excerpts together.

If you drag the extracted text, overlap it on top of another text, and then move it aside, it will liquidly connect them together, which is pretty, but when you zoom in, out, or drag around the workspace, the connected texts will sometimes become invisible or bounce around.

The advantage of concatenating text, besides being visual, is that you can double-click on one to select the whole thing, but this can be covered by utilizing the selection tools. It's also a good idea to use the keyboard shortcut for that tool (Ctrl+L) and the default text selection tool shortcut (Ctrl+T) as appropriate. You can also use the Pen tool to mark connections, which is less restrictive and less cumbersome.

3. Create the folder first and then create the project in it.

If you have a lot of projects and want to organize your home screen, I recommend creating folders first and then creating projects in them. Moving an existing project to a folder isn't supported by dragging nor as a separate menu, but as of March 2023, you can do it with Export-Import. Right-click on the project you want, select export from the drop-down menu, and save the file to an appropriate location. Once you're back in the desired folder, drag the saved file (*.ltproj) in. Select 'Import again' on the dialog box that pops up. After checking the project appear inside the folder, go back to delete the original project.

 

4. Windows version only interface

The advantage of the iPad version is its intuitive controls. The Windows environment with a keyboard and a mouse can be a little less intuitive, but more reliable.

• Highlight view: The feature can be accessed in the Windows version by turning it on from the left menu(keyboard shortcut Alt+G) and holding down the Shift key while dragging.
• Panning: Sometimes it can be annoying that you end up selecting and moving the extracts as you try to pan the screen with left click + dragging. Instead, you can just click and drag with the wheel of your mouse to move around.
• Zooming: This is pretty much common sense, but when zooming in and out of the workspace, just hold down the Ctrl key and turn the mouse wheel.
• Searching: Typing(except when you are working with a textbox) triggers a global search. If you type a number, you can either choose to go to the corresponding page in the open document or look for document titles within the project. You are also given other options, such as find within the current document, find in all documents in the project, find within the current workspace, and find in all workspaces in the project.
• Liquidtext pen not working: If you are using a stylus input such as a digitizer from Wacom, or if your device has a touchscreen like Surface and Galaxy Book series products do, you may not be able to use the pen function with your mouse. In this case, you can turn on the USE FINGER/MOUSE FOR INKING option by opening Settings(...) in the upper right corner.
